Meet Our Muse: Jess Buchanan

Meet Our Muse: Jess Buchanan

As part of our 13 Years In Bloom campaign, we travelled to Ubud, Bali to shoot with the radiant Jess Buchanan – model, mother, and Creative Director of slow fashion label Scarlet Begonia

Born in South Africa, Jess’s deep connection to nature and intentional living shines through everything she does. She embodies the spirit of by charlotte – finding beauty in the everyday, living slowly, and staying true to herself.

We sat down with Jess at sunrise in the Balinese mountains to talk about growing up in South Africa, launching her brand, staying grounded, and falling in love with Bali – just like Charlotte did.

You’ve spoken about your deep love for nature. How did growing up in South Africa influence that?

Growing up there was incredible - I spent so much of my childhood on the beach or camping with my uncles and friends. Those experiences really made me fall in love with the natural beauty of South Africa and everything it has to offer.

What made you decide to move to Bali?

We were craving a change of scenery and the chance to experience something new as a family—especially while Bonnie is still little and we can soak up these early years together.

Do you remember what made you fall in love with Bali?

I first fell in love with Bali at 21 and kept finding myself drawn back, returning several times a year. There’s always been something about this place that fills me with a sense of joy and excitement.

There really is an unexplainable magic in Bali. Where do you feel most at home?

I’m really enjoying being in Ungasan—it’s much quieter than the busier spots, which makes it feel more peaceful. Plus, there are some incredible local food spots nearby, which is perfect because I’m absolutely obsessed with Indonesian food!

Alami Label truly is the embodiment of you. What made you want to start the brand?

This idea had been on my mind for over a decade, and after having Bonnie, it felt like the right time to explore something beyond modelling. So, I poured my heart and soul into bringing it to life.

What makes Scarlet Begonia so unique?

I think what makes it unique is the balance between the everyday and the imaginative. Some pieces are simple and effortless, while others carry a touch of whimsy for those who love to stand out.

In balancing motherhood, modelling and finding time to work on your brand, how do you maintain your inner-peace and wellbeing?

Honestly, life can feel complicated and overwhelming at times, but I try to remind myself that the tough moments won’t last—and better days are on their way.

For us, the Lotus is all about the power of new beginnings; just as the Lotus rises through murky water to bloom in sunlight, we too must rise through challenge to become our most radiant selves. What’s your advice to anyone struggling to navigate their path to bloom? Is there a mantra you live by?

I’d say—trust that even in your most uncertain seasons, something beautiful is quietly taking root. Growth isn’t always visible, but it’s always happening. One mantra I come back to is: “In my own time, in my own way.” It reminds me to honour my pace and trust that my path will unfold exactly as it’s meant to.
