Caring For Your Jewellery

At By Charlotte, we pride ourselves on quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each unique piece is designed in-house and meticulously refined By Charlotte and our designers.

Designed in Sydney, Australia, our jewellery is available in sterling silver, 18k gold vermeil, gold plated and solid gold. All By Charlotte jewellery is nickel free.

From the initial drawings to the final samples, we work closely with all partners within our supply chain to ensure that our jewellery is reflective of the love and consideration that goes into every step of the design process.

To ensure that your jewels last as long as possible, we recommend you follow the below care information.

18k Gold Vermeil

Our 18k gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a high-quality method of gold plating, whereby sterling silver is coated with a thick layer of 18k solid gold.

Gently polish your piece with a soft jewellery cloth to restore its shine.

Store in a dry place, preferably in a jewellery box with an anti-tarnish tab. Give your jewellery an occasional polish to maintain its shine.

We recommend removing your gold vermeil jewellery before swimming, showering, or exercising to preserve its finish.

Keep your pieces in a dry area, stored in a jewellery box with an anti-tarnish tab.

Avoid jewellery cleaning solutions and harsh chemicals. When using a polishing cloth, be gentle to prevent wearing down the gold plating.

Yes, but always use a light touch to avoid excessive friction.

Yes. Perfumes, lotions, fake tan, and household chemicals can cause tarnishing or oxidation. We recommend putting your jewellery on last when getting ready.

Sterling Silver

We use 925 sterling silver, which is a lightweight metal made of 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% comprises alloy, which makes our jewellery durable and perfect for everyday wear.

Use Hagerty Clean followed by a gentle polish with a polishing cloth. Use the inside of the cloth to clean and the outside to polish.

Regular cleaning and proper storage will help prevent tarnish. Avoid direct contact with hairspray, deodorant, body lotion, perfume and fake tan.

While you can, we recommend removing your jewellery to maintain its beauty. Chlorine and bleach can accelerate tarnishing.

Keep it in a dry area, ideally in a jewellery box with an anti-tarnish tab.

Avoid harsh jewellery cleaning solutions not specifically designed for silver.

Yes, exposure to beauty products and chemicals can speed up the tarnishing process.

Yes. Perfumes, lotions, fake tan, and household chemicals can cause tarnishing or oxidation. We recommend putting your jewellery on last when getting ready.

14k Solid Gold

We recommend using Hagerty Jewel Clean, then rinse, dry, and polish with a soft jewellery cloth. For a deep clean, an ultrasonic cleaner can be used.

Solid gold is highly resistant to tarnishing. However, prolonged exposure to cosmetics like fake tan and moisturiser can affect its appearance over time.

Yes, solid gold is durable and water-safe.

Store in a dry area or a jewellery box to keep it protected.

Avoid abrasive cleaners or any harsh chemicals.

Yes, a gentle polish will help maintain its brilliance.

Solid gold is highly durable, but it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals for lasting shine.

Other Metals & Stones

Our 18k gold-plated jewellery is crafted with a sterling silver base, making it a premium alternative to traditional gold-plated pieces that use brass or stainless steel. With proper care and handling, your piece will retain its golden radiance for longer.

How to store 18k gold plated jewellery

To extend the life of your gold-plated jewellery, follow the below care advice:

  • Keep it dry: Store your jewellery in a dry, cool place away from humidity, as moisture can cause tarnishing of the sterling silver beneath the plating.
  • Use a soft pouch or lined jewellery box: Prevent scratches and friction by keeping each piece separate. Soft cloth pouches or anti-tarnish jewellery boxes work best.
  • Avoid exposure to chemicals: Perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and household cleaning agents can accelerate the wear of gold plating. Always put jewellery on last when getting ready.
  • Remove before water exposure: Since sterling silver is prone to tarnishing and gold plating can fade with moisture, take off your jewellery before showering, swimming, or exercising.

How to clean 18k gold plated jewellery

  • Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth – After each wear, use a microfiber or jewellery polishing cloth to remove oils and residue. Avoid abrasive materials, as they can wear down the gold layer.
  • Limit water exposure – Unlike solid gold or gold vermeil, gold-plated jewellery should not be soaked. If needed, lightly dampen a cloth with lukewarm water and carefully wipe the jewellery, ensuring it's fully dry afterward.
  • Avoid silver polish and harsh cleaners which may strip away the gold plating. Instead, stick to dry polishing or mild cleaning when necessary.
  • If your jewellery starts to lose its shine, gently buff it with a clean cloth to restore its lustre without damaging the plating.
  • Rotate your pieces – Gold plating naturally wears over time, so consider alternating your jewellery to minimise excessive wear on any single piece.

How to clean 18k solid gold jewellery

  • Regularly wiping your 18k gold with a soft, lint-free cloth can help remove oils and residue, preserving its natural gleam.
  • For a deeper clean, a solution of mild dish soap and warm water, combined with a gentle brushing using a soft-bristle brush, or by using Hagerty Jewel Clean can revitalise even the dullest pieces.

How to store 18k solid gold jewellery

  • Before storing, ensure that your jewellery is clean and dry.
  • Keep pieces in a lined jewellery box with compartments or individual soft pouches to prevent scratches and friction.
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture, heat, direct sunlight and chemicals.
  • Consider using anti tarnish strips or silica gel packets to absorb moisture and prevent oxidation.
  • Store 18k solid gold jewellery separately from other metals.

Made with pure gold and mixed with other metals for added strength, our 9k gold is more durable than higher-karat gold, making it perfect for daily wear without sacrificing its radiance.

In caring for your 9k gold jewellery, here are a few tips to ensure its long-lasting shine:

How to store 9k jewellery

When not in use, keep your jewellery in a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box to prevent scratches and reduce exposure to air, which can cause tarnishing.

How to clean 9k jewellery

While 9k gold is made to last a lifetime, it does require occasional polishing. To restore its gleam, simply wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. For a deeper clean, a mild solution of warm water and detergent-free dish soap will make your jewellery sparkle—just make sure to dry it thoroughly afterward. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Wearing your 9k jewels

Perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products can all dull your jewellery’s shine. Be sure to put on your jewellery last when getting ready, and remove it before swimming, exercising, or using any chemicals.

  • Gentle Cleaning:

Wipe your enamel jewellery with a soft, damp cloth after each use to remove dirt and oil.

  • Rinse and Dry:

Rinse the jewellery thoroughly and dry it immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent water spots.

  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

Don't use abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals (like bleach or chlorine), or ultrasonic cleaners, as these can damage the enamel.

  • Separate Storage:

Store enamel jewellery separately from other jewellery in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratches and chips.

  • Moisture Control:

Avoid wearing enamel jewellery in the shower or when swimming, and store it in a cool, dry place to prevent moisture damage.

  • Handle with Care:

Enamel is durable but can chip or crack if dropped on a hard surface, so handle it with care.

  • Protect from Sunlight:

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as it can cause the colours to fade.

Many of our pieces feature GH-SI natural and lab-grown diamonds. The GH represents the colour of the diamond, which is 'fine white' and at the high end of nearly colourless range. SI stand for 'Small Inclusions' and represents the clarity of the diamond. Each product description will specify whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown.

We source high quality cubic zirconias to ensure consistency and durability. To the naked eye, cubic zirconia crystals appear almost identical to real diamonds, however they are a man-made stone.

Freshwater pearls are delicate in nature and require special care to ensure they stay beautiful and last for years to come. Here are some tips on how to care for your pearl jewels.

Wearing Your Pearls

  • Put on your pearls last and remove them first. This helps to minimise their contact with creams, oils, cosmetics, and hairspray, which can damage them over time.
  • Avoid wearing your pearls if the string gets wet. A wet cord or string will stretch and damage the pearls.
  • Do not wear your pearls in water. Exposure to water from swimming, showering, or washing dishes can damage the pearls' lustre and cause them to deteriorate.
  • Pearls are also sensitive to body acids. Avoid wearing them during strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating.
  • Store and wear your pearls with care, as they are soft and can easily become scratched. Avoid storing them with other jewellery items that may rub against them and cause damage.
  • The best way to store pearls is in a soft, silky pouch or a jewellery box with separate compartments. This protects them from dust, sunlight, and other harmful elements.

Cleaning Your Pearls

  • After wearing your pearls, wipe them with a soft cloth to remove any body oils or residue.
  • Clean your pearls gently with a small amount of mild washing liquid and warm water. Avoid using harsh detergents or chemicals that can damage the pearls.
  • Dry your pearls with a soft cloth and lay them flat on a towel to air dry. Avoid hanging them, as this can stretch the string and damage the pearls.
  • Keep in mind that pearls should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, as this can damage the delicate surface of the pearls.

To help preserve the condition of the slider and ensure lasting performance, we kindly recommend setting the slider to the preferred length while holding the ball slider firmly with one hand and then using the lobster clasp for daily wear and removal.

Please note, frequent repositioning of the slider may contribute to natural wear over time. This natural wear is not covered under our Warranty Policy.

How To Open Your Bangle

  1. To open the bangle, unclip the safety clasps from both sides of the bangle.
  2. Hold the top button down firmly while pulling the two sides of the bangle apart. Please note, if enough pressure is applied to pull the bangle open without pushing the top button, the bangle will open but the locking mechanism will become damaged.
  3. To close, simply insert the tongue in the opening and secure the safety clasps.
